No Carter-Burke equivalent. If they copied the rest I am not sure why he was left out. I wasn't bored and at least the monsters didn't mostly come at night The-Sarkologist 3 April I've seen a couple of straight to Netflix films and to be honest, with the exception of Bright, I've mostly been disappointed.

So, you can probably understand the apprehension I had when it came to watching this film.

Well, it turned out that I could not have been more wrong because, honestly, this film was nothing short of awesome.

As another reviewer pointed out this is the type of film that Hollywood, when it does well, can go really well - not much story, but great action and great special effects.

Well, story, I probably wouldn't say that the story was that bad either. The film is set in Eastern Europe, which honestly is a break from your typical Middle Eastern terrorist trope of late, but then again the whole Middle Eastern terrorist trope is honestly so naughties.

No, now we are going back to Eastern Europe, and the not so subtle 'Russia is the enemy' again, which honestly opens up so much more for secret technological experiments that have the potential of completely overwhelming a force of highly trained US soldiers - which is what the case is here in this film.

Yeah, we are in Moldovia where a totalitarian government has collapsed, but there is still fighting going on between insurgents and rebel forces.

Yeah, the US is here, but they are only here as peacekeepers which is probably a little unrealistic anyway considering that in this part of the world the US are openly sending in their troops to keep the peace, particularly since there happens to be another superpower just over the border that happens to have a completely different interpretation of what keeping the peace happens to mean.

Anyway, there seems to be some strange things going on, and the government decides to send this DARPA scientist over to find out what's going on.

To cut a story short, it appears in all intents and purposes to be ghosts, but there actually is a lot more behind the fact that they are basically fighting ghosts, but I honestly don't want to give too much away because that would spoil the fun and I've already had some shows spoiled because I have accidentally read ahead while trying to find out other things.

In a way though, this film did remind me a lot of Black Hawk Down, but with a much more supernatural element to it than the previous film, which was just American soldiers killing heaps of Somali's, and somehow managing to survive the encounter.

Well, it felt like that in part, that is until I realised it was a little more than that, and in whole 'let's get the hell out of dodge' part of the film was probably only about a third, namely because the are actually going in there to attempt to get their wounded back, and also to possibly capture one of the ghosts.

It is only when they realise that they are way, way over their head that it becomes evident that retreat is the only option.

Yeah, this film actually turned out to be pretty intense, and was much, much better than expected. It certainly is one of those films that will keep an sci-fi action buff entertained for a little over an hour and a half.

This movie is bad. Also if it's so expensive and recent, why does it look so dilapidated? Also, the accurate depiction of an otherwise mentally healthy child placed in that scenario would be him crawled in fetal position with soiled pants, shaking in an unresponsive catatonic state; not wondering on the battlefield oblivious to his surroundings.

In a war movie showcasing the army's efficiency a general should sound the retreat at the first moment someone says 'we've lost our communication capabilities'; in this movie they decide to go on a suicide mission, because apparently they are "the last line of defense"; this is never supported with any compelling argument, and later turns out the whole mission was unnecessary since the control units were finite in number and bound to expire sooner or later.

If you have the tech to print functioning organisms from ANY material and to extract in one piece and sustain a nervous system outside a body, you already made it, that's where ppl stop and cash in, WHY would this regime invest in an unsafe and unstable application?

Evacuation areas are usually outside danger zones so they ought to be at the edge of the city or at the very least near it so the 20 min flight would have been more than enough to get to sure safety.

Not plot related complaint: a movie, especially an action movie ought to tell it's story at least in part through actions and images; Spectral tells it's story through dialogue that feels less like natural conversation between characters and more like a commentary track playing in the background telling the viewer what's on screen.

This movie used a lot of CGI which would have been fine if it were used correctly: the story has ghosts in it so they put in ghosts, it's a war story so they made the city look war torn, it's set in Moldova so why the hell am I seeing landmarks of Budapest in it?!

Crop them out for god's sake, that should have been job number one. Netflix is a global company with a global market which means ppl in Hungary and Moldova might find it annoying to see their cities mixed up when the tech is already available to make any city to look like any other city.

NewGirlNickMiller 1 December If you enjoy action adventure films and weird sci-fi thrillers with terrible science, then you'll like this film.

It's your typical middle east war flick paired with a sci-fi movie, and oh my god almost every trope in the book.

Let me be clear that I didn't hate it. The rating is just reflective of my objective look at how the film did. Let's start with the lead, Clyne, who is played by James Badge Dale I don't have anything against good ole' Sam, mind.

I just don't think he's a good actor. James and the rest of the cast do an adequate job of acting their roles in this film. That's honestly all I'm looking for in an action film, adequate.

The plot is a bit goofy. It starts out slow, then gets pretty strong and intriguing about half an hour in. However, after the big reveal which is completely outlandish and ridiculous , the film just left me rather It suddenly went from this intriguing film that made me want to know what was going on to just another action film where we shoot things and blow everything up.

Since I watched it on Netflix, I actually found myself browsing Reddit on my secondary monitor during the last thirty minutes or so.

The one thing i can say is that the reveal wasn't as predictable as I was expecting. That's not to say that it ruined the film, because I understand there has to be a suspension of disbelief in sci-fi The effects were pretty good, as you might expect from a film of this caliber.

I don't really have anything bad to say about the effects, which is mostly why I didn't give it a worse score. Again, didn't hate the film, but I wouldn't watch it again.

Remember, think for yourself when it comes to film. Don't take reviews too seriously, because not everyone has the same tastes. This movie sucked so much in making my first ever comment as the end of it plays.

Next question is does this comment have spoilers? Nothing could make this movie any worse than it already is.

As other reviews have noted, it's heavy on the cliche's. The characters are cardboard, but not the flimsy type, a thicker, deeper cardboard.

But then it completely slides off the rails. It's kinda like the writers got stuck, couldn't come up with a smarter way to end it, looked at the remaining budget and said, "Let's Michael Bay this sumbish.

MoistMovies 9 December That's what I said to myself when the credit's rolled 'Very Average, but half decent' Every single character is a trope, especially the military team.

A generic form you've seen before multiple times in other films. All the soldiers fit one. I can't even remember her role already Some decent actors who did what they could with the badly written dialog.

The effects were good for netflix, tho i wish they'd spent the time and money on something else.

I assume that miss rate will decrease as they learn to adapt. The story for being simple and to the point was decent. Im not sure if i'd recommend this film..

It skids over the 5. This movie not exciting at all, no thrill, no suspense. And the physical explanation behind all of this nonsense was just stupid.

The authors found this cool state of matter Bose-Einstein-Condensate on Wikipedia and used it to explain the nature of their ghostly cloaked soldier zombies Nothing of what is shown can be referred to as condensate.

But I can deal with bad physics. In this case overly stupid physics. If the movie is at least fun.

But Spectral is not. All characters were completely irrelevant. You don't care for anyone and are not interested in the solution to the "big mystery" on where these condensate soldiers come from.

With all this production value the special effects are actually really good and the sets are amazing there was so much potential.

But it actually just sucks. Big times. Bad, bad, BAD writing. What a shame. That's all. Should have been flatus.

Scunner 13 September The first half of the film is fine, decent action, intriguing mystery, but once the mystery is resolved and we find out what the monsters are all that hard work just goes 'parp' in a sad little cloud of gas.

Because that's what the monsters are, super-cooled, extremely diffuse gas, in a state that wouldn't last a fraction of a second in any temperature much above absolute zero.

A fart could destroy these monsters and yet they're smashing up tanks. A mild toot would render them non-existent in a nanosecond and yet apparently they can only be taken out with plasma weapons.

Honestly they should have just made them out of flatulence because that would have been altogether more plausible. This was a real stinker.

I am an expat in Budapest and when they were shooting this movie I came across their shooting scenes several times in the city.

It all seemed very impressive, they really turned Buda Palace and some big streets of Budapest into ruins, so they are not purely computer generated.

I've seen many movie shooting here, but never at such large scale. I had high expectations for this movie and as soon as it was released I rushed to watch it.

Unfortunately, the movie was more ridiculous than an impressive and smart sci-fi that I hoped for. First of all, maybe American audience is not that good at guessing locations in Europe immediately, but it is funny that the movie is evidently shot in Budapest, showing all the sights, do not even attempt to wrap it up as another city and then we are told it is Moldova.

If you have not heard about Moldova much, google it. That's right, Moldova is a small, struggling country, one of the poorest in Europe. It is really funny to show Moldova as a highly militarized, evil empire, generating supernatural ghost soldiers.

Also while looking at the map of Moldova have you noticed any Russian border in the North? No, because there is Ukraine.

I do not understand, in this dystopian future Great Moldovan Empire annexed Ukraine or Mother Russia completed its job? Or the director thinks Moldova is Ukraine, that is situated in the capital of Hungary?

Out of that absurdity, the movie is everything but smart sci-fi. Nothing is explained, what is happening, why is it happening, nothing in the movie makes sense.

Pretty much there is no story at all, it all looks like playing some computer game from the middle and not finishing, just shooting some weird creatures from anything you have and then go home satisfied that is what the protagonist does btw.

The movie looks like the internet meme - dog with eye- glasses, in a chemistry lab, saying "I have no idea what I am doing". Clyne could be the Sherlock Holmes of Techno-Thrillers.

His character is based around a core narrative concept where an investigator gets thrust into an extraordinary situation and uses their single weapon - that is a keen scientific mind - to both investigate and find a solution to the problem.

On the surface, the movie threatens to be yet another reel with great graphics and oh boy, they were Great with a predicteable plot, but it offers just enough for it to be worth the watch.

It's an extremely slim hope, and I might be blown away by the amazing military tech and vfx that was paraded around, but I'm confident that Clyne could make a great character to build something upon.

I really feel that his story isn't over, whether he returns to making the newest technologies for the world, there are plenty of military horrors that could emerge that could require his unique genius and unflinching in the face of danger.

Clyne meets him on the arrival and together with the CIA agent Fran Madison Emily Mortimer , he sees the images captured by the hyperspectral goggles that he had developed for the soldiers.

The images show spectrums with humanoid shape and one of them killing a soldier. Nobody knows what they are there are many beliefs.

The residents believe they are ghosts of the war; Madison believes it is a camouflage clogging; but Clyne wants to investigate first.

They also love a montage, where incredible weapons and sciency stuff can be created in only a few hours! But I could forgive all this, because it was fun to watch and didn't feel like a chore at any point.

Sure, it won't fire your brain cells to their full extent, but like I said, it has nice touches and a very nice feel, visually. It is reminiscent of recent computer games, such as Gears of War or Titanfall, leading me to believe the creators may be gaming fans.

They do get that feel right however. They seem to understand the look well. There are lot's of little touches throughout, that made me feel I'd been here before, but they never went to the 'ripping off' point, but more a nostalgic tip of the hat to previous sci-fi.

The acting is all solid, aside from moments where the characters don't seem quite troubled enough, considering they may be snuffed out by an invisible force at any moment, but that is often the case with these movies, due to the short amount of time they have to set the scene, develop characters and tell the story, but aside from this, everyone is likable, if a little two dimensional overall.

I think this is why serialised tories are taking off so much in recent years. The visual effects are also very nice and miles better than I expected for a straight to Netflix movie.

I can't recall any moment where I cringed at the effects. The war-torn sets were also nicely done.

Don't go in expecting some sci-fi epic that will change your world view. Go in expecting a bit of fun, with some nice effects and a simple story.

Not a bad way to spend an hour and forty eight minutes, if you like sci-fi. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. It's not exactly a 'Netflix-Original'.

Started out as a joint production between Universal and Legendary Films with a budget of million. After completion, Universal wasn't happy with it, Legendary didn't like their feedback and they had a falling out -- the planned summer theatrical release was canceled.

Chinese-owned Legendary Films shopped around, Netflix picked it up as an already finished movie and branded it as a 'Netflix-Original'.

Not awful. Competent, experienced cast; OK story and decent effects contribute to a production that had some budget to work with.

A few plot-holes here and there, like beings that can fly over things, yet laying iron shavings on the ground provides a barrier of protection because they can't step in it.

Contrived ending, but so what -- it's an enjoyable watch Loved the performances from the soldiers, their voices were extremely believable; they spoke with clear intent and purpose throughout.

The action was well choreographed. I found the sound design to be well done and matched the FX visual and corroborated the story being told.

The dialog made good sense, and there was an excellent focus on information being conveyed back and forth throughout the characters' interplay, and for the story itself.

I found the revelations and discoveries to be quite interesting, feasible, believable, and relatively congruent with science to be satisfying.

The first film for this individual which relied heavily on "on- the-ground" military action that I felt was non-offensive, nor hyper-stylized I applaud the film-makers here!

Rock solid; Enjoyable. Is this the best movie of ? Is this the worst movie of ? Spectral is just a decent movie which I wouldn't recommend to everybody.

Especially the sci-fi ones? At the end of the day I enjoyed watching this film more than, let's say, hmmm I will definitely watch it after a couple of years.

Netflix have really upped their game with their original titles lately, and this film is no exception. The acting is good, the story is relatively original considering how many themes are usually recycled ad nauseum in sci-fi and the special effects were absolutely outstanding.

The pace of the film is perfect and there's never a reason to lose interest, especially as our cast delve deeper into the mystery of what's going on and how to deal with it.

Some people have compared the story with those two titles pre-release, and after watching you can see how it could be inspired by them, but only as much as other themes in cinema inspire each other; the story itself is very original.

If you like your action with an original story and extremely well- polished, then you'll probably enjoy this. Very good movie, I would recommend it to others seeking a new science fiction story.

The second I saw the cover to this movie I was a bit interested I watched the trailer and was sucked in. I immediately watched the film, and loved it.

Great idea for a movie, excellent CGI and special effects, good story though it was a tiny bit too short and I wish we got to see more details of plot lines and more action, but not much more is needed.

Also it did not have a plot like most sci-fi movies today, meaning it was unique, immediately eye catching and did not have a plot that was too "tryhard" or left me lost or confused for half of the movie by putting too many side stories into it.

Overall, it was one of the best movies I've seen lately. First, the Good: There is a lot of eye-candy - like a video game trailer.

The production design, stunt-work, locations, visual FX CG AND miniatures , score, and camera work are all very, very respectable - as good if not better than some more "mainstream" movies I've seen.

The soldiers for a change look like they've actually handled a weapon before although some of the tactics are kind of silly.

The acting is decent -i. The Not-So-Good: The writing is borderline unforgivably bad - with more than a few parts ripped right out of other movies.

There IS one inkling of an original idea here the genesis of the baddies but that's about it. Everything else has been done before Overall, if you're bored and want to shut your brain down for minutes, it's worth watching I really don't know from where others are coming.

Even one Romanian author said that the girl talked in bad Romanian. The girl and the boy were talking in Slovenian.

Which was a disaster error from producers of this film. Shooted in Hungary, stated that is Moldavia and talking Slovenian.

It's like you shooted film in America, stated that its Mexico and people talked french. It's hilarious bud after all the geography and language failures it's still decent movie.

People should really learn some basic facts before doing things. If I were 30 or 40 years younger I'd likely rate this movie higher.

But I'm not, so I can't The FX, both visual and sound, are very well done and my hat's off to those teams.

Score: A The acting is decent and mostly believable. Score: B- But those plot holes are large enough to sail a modern-day cruise ship through.

So I'd have to score the script a solid F. Summary: this won't be the worst film you've ever seen and if watched with a thumpin' sound system a big woofer is required you'll likely get a little pumped in spots.

But don't be surprised if you look at your buddies and do a few eye rolls. Didn't learn about this movie till a week before it was released, and based on the previews alone I was thoroughly excited.

The preview gave it a "Final Fantasy: Spirits Within" feel to it; however, while watching it with the same expectation I also had a feel to another blockbuster "Aliens.

Actors I felt were on point, as well as effects. Probably watch it a few more times with the hopes to dive deeper into the meaning, though I feel I got the premise on the first viewing.

Being prior military, I did like watching their tactics; yet, having never been a Special Forces Operator I'm sure there are aspects that have been Hollywood, but from my own personal experience the stuff I did notice did fall in line to what I have done, so good on them for getting those right.

Highly recommend the movie for Combat and Scifi experience. While taking things maybe not intentionally from some older movies, I really felt this was a whole new experience and loved every second of it.

This is what Hollywood does best; a massive CGI galore that supplements a mediocre storyline that has as many plot holes as a Swiss cheese.

Initially I hadn't heard about the movie, and knew nothing about what it was about, prior to getting the chance to sit down and watch it.

I did snoop around on IMDb just moments before sitting down to watch it. And what made me stay in the seat was that IMDb mentioned that it was about a special-ops team dispatched to fight supernatural beings.

What is not to like about the supernatural? So I sat down to watch "Spectral" with literally no expectations.

So I was genuinely blown away come the ending of the movie. Wow, this was a special effects movie of massive proportions.

Both the visual effects and the sound effects were amazing, and they alone make it worthwhile to sit down and watch "Spectral".

As for the acting, well, let's just say that this is not Shakespearian acting on any levels, nor is it acting that would incur any kind of statue or trophy.

However, I will say that James Badge Dale really carried the movie singlehandedly with his performance as Clyne.

He was the only one who stood out in this myriad of impressive CGI effects and blasting sub-woofers. If you sit down to watch "Spectral" and expect a grand story, then you will be sorely disappointed, because this movie is essentially as simplistic as they come.

A group of special-ops are trapped behind enemy lines, fighting a deadly enemy that they can't see with the naked eye. And that is it; the entire storyline summarized in a single sentence.

But to make it better, then this simplistic storyline has more plot holes than a Swiss cheese. So many things just didn't make any logical sense, and equally many things just didn't add up.

But hey, all these shortcomings were instantly blown away by a cascade of impressive CGI special effects and a constant bombardment of sound waves from the sub-woofer.

A perfect choice of movie for a lazy evening or if you are nurturing yourself back together after a binge The setup and first act built the film into a far more compelling story and premise than you might expect, looking at the poster.

I could just put my feet up and disengage my mind. The first half was a brilliantly put together military mystery, however, and had me at full attention.

Albeit not exactly high brow drama, it was effective and enthralling, seemed well-written and well-designed, and set us up for an interesting conclusion.

As the film progressed, however, the believability and script writing went to heck in a hand basket, and we had polarity reversals, ion compressors, fourth states, and other techno jargon all over the shop.

What a disappointing end to a super cool beginning. It was the best low-middle ranged budget movies that I watched recently.

Casts were pretty good, but this kind of film, its speed and following more protagonists' happenings not allow them to fly. So their performances were a little bit flat.

Camera department brought a high quality spectacle like an Oscar nominated film. Costumes and decoration were absolutely believable and detailed.

All in all it was a visually perfect movie. It recommended for science-fiction,thriller and action film fans.

It watchable once-twice. The army is sent in with two advisers to check out a strange enemy. Advisors: Uber-engineer-scientist guy and a female CIA agent who doesn't appear to know how to fire a weapon but speaks the local lingo.

Now if her role could have been more Ripleyish then I would've given the movie another star. How long do we have to keep being fed such uninspiring female roles?
